David Bowie’s terminal cancer was kept secret from all but his closest family and friends but David hinted of his illness to fans in his final lyrics.
The words to the song on Bowie’s final album ‘Blackstar’ make much more sense now that we know what was happening during David’s final year.
The last song on ‘Blackstar’ is ‘I Can’t Give Everything Away’. It goes:
I know something is very wrong
The pulse returns for prodigal sons
The blackout’s hearts with flowered news
With skull designs upon my shoes
Bowie producer Tony Visconti said, “His death was no different from his life – a work of Art”.
In ‘Dollar Days’ Bowie repeats the lines:
I’m trying to
I’m dying to
Probably the most insightful message is in the words to ‘Lazarus’, a song that is now much more potent considering the context of the last 15 hours.
Look up here, I’m in heaven
I’ve got scars that can’t be seen
I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen
Everybody knows me now
The video features a frail Bowie attempting to levitate in a hospital bed singing:
Oh I’ll be free
Just like that bluebird
Oh I’ll be free
Ain’t that just like me
In his Facebook post Tony Visconti wrote, “He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry”.
