Iggy Pop stripping off in the name of art had nothing to do with his “winkie”.
Pop has never been shy about getting his lithe body out on stage, and despite has advancing years still appears sans his shirt at gigs.
Iggy took things one step further by stripping off for a group of artists at the New York Academy of Art recently, something the Lust for Life singer reveals was about laying himself on the line, and had nothing to do with showing off his manhood.
“It was not about anything silly,” Iggy explained to Entertainment Weekly. “It wasn’t about my winkie, or anything. It was just a documentation of what’s left of me. I thought it was a good idea the artist had and I enjoyed so much the company of the 21 drawing students and working artists. It was a very nice vibe in the room.
“It’s not the sort of thing I’m going to start doing as a weekend job. I did it once at the start of my career, I was photographed also without clothes by Bill King and Gerard Malanga from the Warhol Factory, so it was time.”
The idea was the brainchild of British artist Jeremy Deller, who is curating an exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum entitled Iggy Pop Life Class later this year (16). Jeremy said in a statement that it makes perfect sense for Iggy to be the subject of a life class, as his body is central to understanding rock music.
Iggy was required to hold each pose for 20 minutes, which led him to come up with his own unique way of passing the time.
“The way I got through it, without going crazy, was listening to my own songs from my albums in my head,” he shared. “I know how long they are and inevitably when I was halfway through the fifth song the little bell would ring and then I’d get my break.”
