U.S. TV host James Corden poked fun at Beyonce’s Lemonade TV special with his own parody titled “Lemonjames”.
Beyoncé debuted new music during a mysterious TV event over the weekend (23-24Apr16) which turned out to be a series of music videos from her new album Lemonade.
The singer appeared to open up about troubles in her marriage to Jay Z in songs including Sorry and Pray You Catch Me, plus the spoken word segments between tracks, which were told in gentle, softly-spoken tones.
James impersonated her narration to describe the troubles of writing an opening monologue in his parody Lemonjames: A Visual Monologue, which aired during The Late Late Show on Monday night (25Apr16).
“I try to write a monologue for you night after night,” James said with an American accent. “Even when we don’t have a show, I write a monologue, but you don’t see that. This is the news, that’s in the news, what else is in the news? You guys see this, you guys see… me.”
He recreates Beyonce’s most recognisable looks from the TV special, including her cornrowed appearance on the Lemonade cover art, and the yellow dress from her sassy Hold Up video. Instead of smashing car windows with a baseball bat, James wields the bat on old television sets backstage at the show while wearing a similar yellow dress and long, blonde wig.
In other parody scenes, which are intercut with actual footage from Lemonade, James scrubs himself in the bath, swings a red lightbulb chain around while wearing a Beyonce wig, and makes lemonade while dressed in black underwear.
He also references Beyonce’s now-famous line, “He better call Becky with the good hair” from her track Sorry, which implies Jay Z has cheated on her. James twists the lyric to address his chat show rivals Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel.
“Did that make you laugh, baby? That’s one of my own. Did that make you laugh like Jimmy with the good hair?” he said.
Many of Beyonce’s fans have been speculating who “Becky” could be and many believe it’s fashion designer Rachel Roy as she wrote “good hair don’t care” on Instagram hours after the special aired. However, she has now released a statement insisting there’s no truth to the rumours.
They have also guessed that Jay Z’s former protege Rita Ora could be the one because she was recently took a picture on Snapchat showing her wearing a lemon-detailed bra, as well as stepping out in the same outfit worn by Beyonce in her video.
James wasn’t alone in parodying Beyonce – fellow host Stephen Colbert also presented a sketch in which he hits objects with a baseball bat while dressed in an all-yellow outfit on Monday night.
