People have grown used to Prince’s constant efforts to thwart every unauthorized use of his music and image, even if it meant legally bringing down fan websites, but nobody expected such actions from Janet Jackson.
Recently, Instagram has been complying with requests from Jackson’s management to remove unauthorized pictures and concert videos that were being posted by fans attending her concerts. The news first went wide on the New York Post’s Page Six where it was reported that some people’s accounts were even deleted by the service. One person said they had received “five e-mails from Instagram . . . about the five videos I had posted . . . It seems like Miss Jackson’s [legal] team is on fire. What a shame they don’t understand the times we live in.”
Billboard is now reporting that Jackson is hearing her fan’s poor opinions of the actions and has told her legal team to be more selective in their enforcement. In a statement on Twitter, she said that lengthier videos would still be targeted but short clips would be ignored.
Hey you guys, I have been listening…
I love and appreciate my fans. I want you to know that I enjoy watching the short video clips of how you are Burning It Up at the Unbreakable shows. Please keep posting them.
My team is passionate about protecting the intellectual property we are creating for the tour and possible future projects. It was never their intention, acting on my behalf, to have social media accounts removed. Permitting the use of long clips does present a contractual problem for these projects. I hope you understand. I trust the fans will use their short recordings for their own memories and to share on their social media networks of choice.
I have asked my team to change their approach and allow you to engage socially with these videos.
I know I wouldn’t be here without the love I stand on.
Jackson needs to calm her fans as the sales of her latest album, Unbreakable, took a huge fall in the second week. While it started at number 1, it fell to 8 in its second week on a drop in sales of over 70%.
