The house that Johnny Mathis has owned for over fifty years was destroyed Monday evening in a fire.
Mathis, who was not home at the time, said that the house was a total loss. He told KTLA-TV “It’s the only house I’ve ever had. There’s nothing left.”
According to reports, firefighters had trouble getting to the home because of the narrow roads in the area, being forced to hike up a hill to fight the blaze. A member of the Los Angeles Fire Department told the station that neighbors helped them locate some cherished memorabilia which they were able to save.
There are conflicting reports on the source of the fire. A fire department spokesman said that the fire spread from a vegetation fire while another person said it started inside the mansion in an aquarium room.
Mathis is in the midst of a long tour to celebrate his 60th anniversary in show business, which takes him through next year. His next show is Friday, November 13 at the Oak Ridge Boys Theatre in Branson, MO.
