Lady Gaga used Sunday’s (10Jan16) Golden Globes to announce her new record will be out later in 2016.
The flamboyant singer was celebrating after taking home one of the golden statues, winning Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie for American Horror Story: Hotel. In the press room backstage she opened up about her music plans, confirming she has been working on tracks which will be made public within a matter of months.
“I am putting out an album this year,” she told reporters. “I won’t tell you when, but it is coming out this year.”
The star didn’t add much else about the record, which is follow up to her 2013 offering ARTPOP. Although the official release date wasn’t confirmed, Gaga did explain how much her work on the Ryan Murphy TV show has influenced her song writing.
“It reminded me that in my own life and in my music, at times I play a character and I become them fully,” she said. “(My character) The Countess just couldn’t care less, she’s lived too long and knows too much to be bothered by a thing. I’m a little bit different than that, but I will say that I think that confidence will stay with me.”
Gaga also opened up about working with the idea of darkness, something she’s done throughout her career and called on again during American Horror Story: Hotel. She can understand dealing with unpleasant issues isn’t for everyone, but the 29-year-old star insists it can be a positive experience.
“For many people darkness is just that – they see it as a vacant space,” she added. “For me darkness is an expression of pain. You can create things that are so beautiful out of things that make you sad. It was thrilling to return to it.”
This is evident in her track Til It Happens to You, which is featured on the campus rape documentary The Hunting Ground.
Gaga was raped when she was 19, something she has spoken about in the past, so the song is close to her heart. For this reason she brushed off speculation she could score an Oscar nomination for it when they are announced on Thursday (14Jan16).
“Shall we just take it a day at a time dear?” she laughed. “This is a lot. An Oscar nomination would be tremendous. But the true win is in the work, and I really truly feel that. The win is always in the creative process.”
