One Direction singer Liam Payne hopes the band’s new single, History, provides “closure” to fans.
One Direction became celebrities after appearing on Britain’s The X Factor in 2010, but to the dismay of many devotees the boy band has announced a hiatus, starting in March 2016.
The group will release their fifth studio album, Made in the A.M., on 13 November (15), and they released another tune from the LP, called History, on Friday (06Nov15). Payne reveals it is a track dedicated to celebrating everything he and his bandmates have accomplished with the aid of fans over the past few years.
“More than anything, the song is about the way the fans and everyone have created this massive thing — One Direction — over the past five years,” Liam told Entertainment Weekly. “Out of (History) comes a little bit of closure for this chapter of One Direction.”
It is clear History was made to appease listeners who are fretting over One Direction’s swiftly approaching break, with lyrics such as, “You and me, we got a whole lot of history / We could be the greatest thing the world has ever seen”, and, “This is not the end / We can make it, you know it, you know.”
A unique element of the song is the fact real-life fans actually lend their voices to the chorus, a feat orchestrated by band member Niall Horan and music producer Julian Bunetta, that Liam himself wishes he could take credit for.
“That was actually my idea,” he joked.
Although he was not physically there when fans were in the recording studio, singing for the chorus, Liam assures them his absence “was nothing personal”.
Ultimately he is happy with History, as the singer feels it represents a true collaboration between One Direction and their listeners.
“It’s really great because obviously that song is mainly about the fans and what they’ve done; I think it was important that they were a part of it, to close the album,” Liam explained.
