Country Music Hall of Fame member Mel Tillis is currently recovering in a Nashville hospital after undergoing colon surgery.
Tillis, 83, underwent the procedure at Centennial Medical Center on Friday, January 8 and is still hospitalized. This has led to a number of reports that his health was failing but his rep Don Murray Grubbs told the Tennessean that he is doing much better. “Doctors said he’s doing fine and on the right track. He’s awake and watching television.”
While the circumstances behind the surgery are not known, the Country Music Cruise, on which Tillis was scheduled to perform, released a statement saying that the singer underwent emergency surgery.
We regret that Mel Tillis will not be joining us on the Country Music Cruise 2016. Mel has had to have emergency colon surgery. We have been told that he is doing fine, but will need several weeks of recovery time. We wish him a full and speedy recovery and hope he can join us on a future cruise.
Bobby Bare is replacing Tillis on the cruise.
Mel Tillis had 36 top ten country hits including six number 1’s (I Ain’t Never (1972), Good Woman Blues (1976), Heart Healer (1976), I Believe In You (1978), Coca-Cola Cowboy (1979), Southern Rains (1980)).
