Joan Baez turned 75 last Saturday (January 9) and, on January 27, a long list of veteran artists will come together at the Beacon Theatre in New York to celebrate her milestone and career.
Among those already confirmed for the show:
Paul Simon
Jackson Browne
Mavis Staples
Emmylou Harris
Judy Collins
Richard Thompson
Indigo Girls
Mary Chapin Carpenter
David Bromberg
Damien Rice
Nano Stern
More acts are expected to be announced.
The tribute will be filmed by WNET in New York for future broadcast on PBS’ Great Performances.
Mary Chapin Carpenter said of the evening “She has been a mentor, an inspiration and a role model for anyone who ever picked up a guitar and wanted to believe they could do more than just sing pretty songs. She has showed multiple generations that music can move and inspire as well as be a force for courage, solidarity, fellowship and justice. To be able to celebrate her 75th birthday with her in New York City is a dream evening, and I think I will feel 17 again for much of it.”
Emmylou Harris added “Joan’s stunningly beautiful voice stirred an entire generation, and opened our hearts to the plight of so many among us. She truly changed the world for the better. Happy birthday to a great and compassionate artist.”
Joan has also announced a U.S. tour in conjunction with Amnesty International. “I am pleased once again to be joining forces with Amnesty International, this time on the critical and urgent issue of racial and ethnic disparities of incarceration, right here in the United States.”
