British actor Alan Rickman has died at age 69 after a battle with cancer.
Rickman was one of the screen’s great villains playing Hans Gruber in the Die Hard movies, the Sherriff of Nottingham in ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter movies.
More recently he portrayed CBGB owner Hilly Kristal in the ‘CBGB’ movie.
Rickman was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and appeared in Romeo and Juliet (1978) before scoring his first major roles for the BBC in 1982. His first big role was as Vicomte de Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1985. Then the world discovered him as the evil Hans Gruber in the first Die Hard in 1988.
Rickman has also starred in ‘Michael Collins’, ‘Dogma’, and ‘Alice In Wonderland’. He has won BAFTA, Golden Globe and People’s Choice Awards but has never been nominated for an Academy Award.
Harry Potter creator J. K. Rowling said today “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I am to hear of Alan Rickman’s death. He was a magnificent actor & a wonderful man”.
Sir Ian McKellen posted, “ALAN RICKMAN (1946-2016)
There is so much that is matchless to remember about Alan Rickman”.
