Sam Smith is mortified that he went for a full-on “Downton Abbey” bow when he met Britain’s Prince William.
Smith is a huge fan of the historical drama series, which followed the story of an upper class family and their group of servants and recently showed its final season. Unfortunately, this proved a sticking point when he met the royal at the premiere of James Bond movie Spectre, which he supplied the theme tune for, in London in October (15).
“My issues is that I watch too much Downton Abbey,” he laughed to US talk show host Jimmy Fallon. “You get instructions, right, they say you’ve got to bow, with one arm behind your back. If someone tells you to bow – I properly went for it. I bowed.”
Sam squirmed as he was shown a photograph of himself bowing for the prince, in part because several people also caught in the image appeared to find the situation amusing. “You have to just (dip your head) apparently – I am at a full right angle,” he giggled.
Sam has re-released his award-winning album, with the new version called In the Lonely Hour (Drowning Shadows Edition). The first track on it is Money On My Mind, which was a huge hit in his native UK. While many musicians would be pleased about that, it’s a double-edged sword for Sam as he has grown tired of the song.
“It was number one in the UK,” he said. “I love all my songs but that one grates on me a little bit, just a little bit. I shot myself in the foot there.”
The star also opened up about his upcoming break from music, explaining why he’s taking some time off. “All my music is so insanely personal that I need to step away from everything… see my family, get into some arguments with my mum…” he said.
