Singer Sam Smith is taking a hiatus so he can go home and be “a 23 year old”.
Smith has had a crazy 12 months, winning four Grammy Awards, as well as two prizes at the Brits, and he is currently in the middle of promoting his James Bond theme song, Writing’s on the Wall. But once that is all done, the star is ready for a well-earned break.
“I’ve been going now for three years non-stop and it feels right for me to just go home and just live my life and be a 23 year old,” he told ET Online. “My love life, the downs and ups, it never stops, so I’m always inspired by stuff like that, but it’d be good to spend some time (just) dating.”
Sam’s unrequited love was the subject of his debut album, In the Lonely Hour, which brought him so much critical acclaim and topped the charts around the world. While the singer is keen to rest up with family and friends for a while back in England, it doesn’t mean his creative juices have stopped flowing.
“I have been writing a little bit,” he shared. “Already I have a little bit of a direction of what I want to say and what I want to do and the sound, how I want things to sound, but there’s a long way to go.”
Sam might not get too much chance to relax with the success of Writing’s on the Wall. Hopes are high that the star will follow in the footsteps of his Bond theme tune predecessor Adele, who won an Academy Award for her track Skyfall. Sam is reluctant to think along those lines and is just pleased to be part of the 007 franchise.
“It was a dream of mine to do Bond, but I never thought it would happen this quickly,” he said. “It’s been an absolute whirlwind of an experience, but I love this song so much and when you see it with the film, it will all make complete sense.”
