Music producer Skrillex transformed the pain of his mother’s death into musical inspiration.
The 27 year old has already earned six Grammy Awards for his work and although he is a normally an industrious person, personal conflict created a snag in the remixing process for his song Stranger – which was released in 2014 as a single off his debut studio album Recess.
“My mum had passed away earlier this year (2015) right in the middle of us finishing the edit,” he tells The Creators Project.
Skrillex released an official remixed version of the tune along with a new music video as a Christmas gift for fans over the holidays via The Creators Project. Although his mother’s demise was painful, the familial loss ultimately proved to be inspirational, as the musician felt the need to completely alter the meaning of the track for the reworked version.
“Stranger kind of fell on the backburner for a while, and obviously this song was older so I just felt like I should rework it,” he shared. “This was actually only like a month ago. (I thought) why don’t I just flip the song into something else so it doesn’t feel irrelevant?”
The newly released Stranger remix is far more muted and introspective than the hard-hitting dubstep original.
While deciding on the matching visuals for the music video, Skrillex tapped into his youth for inspiration.
“It’s very inspired by movies like Hook and Peter Pan,” he explained. “I thought it was really appropriate for the song.
“The meaning of this video was being in this world where you’re a stranger. Everyone’s a stranger, and names don’t matter, and being a stranger disintegrates walls and you get to have a true human interaction. It’s the hardest thing to keep when you get older, that child inside of you that’s so free and has no filter. That’s what makes it so real.”
