Steven Tyler Talks About Drug Addiction

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler fears he is only “a hit record away” from returning to his “humongous” drug addiction.

67-year-old Tyler has been open about his battle with drugs throughout his career, and during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show on Tuesday (26Jan16), he opened up about the efforts he makes to stay clean.

“I was a humongous, to-die-for drug addict,” he explained, “but I keep it in check. I’ve got a 12-step thing that I do. (I’m) out of the rabbit hole.”

Despite being drug-free now, Steven isn’t naive enough to think he’ll never slip back into his old ways at some point in the future.

When Stern asked if he felt “confident” he would never return to using drugs, Steven replied: “That I don’t, I’m just a hit record away… It’s so hard to survive in this world. People want a little release. I don’t blame people for getting high; I took it to the wall.”

Recently, the singer has focused on his solo material and first country album, but he insists he hasn’t turned his back on Aerosmith.

“(I’d) be nothing without that band… I love them to death,” he said, before adding he intends to record new songs with the group in the near future.

Aerosmith first hit the big time in the 1970s and enjoyed a career resurgence in the late-1980s and 1990s with hits like Cryin’, Love in an Elevator and Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.

The band still sells out concerts all over the world, and its success recently helped Steven impart some words of advice to Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose, ahead of his band’s upcoming classic line-up reunion at the 2016 Coachella festival in California.

“I said, ‘You need to get fucking back together again soon, because we all miss you,’” he told Howard, explaining to Axl if the members didn’t reunite soon “in another four or five years, no one’s even going to know who they were.”
