Taylor Swift has given Kesha $250,000 to help with “any of her financial needs” after the singer’s court battle.
The 26-year-old singer once again showed her philanthropic side through the donation, following Kesha losing her bid to get out of her Sony contract last week (end19Feb16).
The Tik Tok star broke down in a Manhattan, New York court on Friday as a judge ruled she had to abide by the terms of her six-album deal.
The singer had claimed label bosses have stalled her career by refusing to allow her to work with any producer but hitmaker Dr. Luke, who she has accused of drugging and sexually and emotionally abusing her.
“In a show of support, Taylor Swift has donated $250,000 to Kesha to help with any of her financial needs during this trying time,” a spokesperson for Taylor wrote in a statement.
However, her decision to make the donation was met with apparent cynicism by Demi Lovato, who made a thinly veiled reference to Taylor on her Twitter page on Monday morning (22Feb16).
“Take something to Capitol Hill or actually speak out about something and then I’ll be impressed,” she wrote.
Demi then expanded on this in a comment on a fan of Taylor’s Instagram account, which had drawn attention to Demi’s first tweet about Taylor.
“How the fuck am I making this about myself?” Demi wrote. “At least I’m talking about it. Not everyone has 250k to just give to people. Would love to but I didn’t grow up with money and def haven’t made as much as her (sic). At least I speak up about shit that’s uncomfortable to talk about rather than trying to be politically correct 24/7.
“There’s no ‘rivalry’ I just give more fucks than other people and would rather start a dialogue ABOUT WOMEN COMING FORWARD ABOUT BEING RAPED than throw money at one person. I didn’t shade Taylor. If you take it that way than (sic) fine. I’m just tired of seeing women use ‘women empowerment’ and ‘feminism’ to further brands without actually being the ones that have the uncomfortable conversations. I get shade and I don’t give a fuck because someone has to be the one to take it. At least I’m getting my hands dirty.”
Demi has been very vocal of her support for Kesha, and penned a lengthy essay on Twitter on Sunday voicing her opinions about the legal battle.
She isn’t the only pop peer taking a stand following Kesha’s loss in court – Lily Allen and Lorde were among the stars who offered the embattled singer their support via social media on Friday.
“standing with @KeshaRose through this traumatic, deeply unfair time,” Lorde wrote. “send good vibes her way everyone”, while Lady Gaga echoed her sentiment and wrote, “There are people all over the world who love you @KeshaRose. And I can say truly I am in awe of your bravery.”
