My Friend The Chocolate Cake’s latest video is a homage to Australian artist Jeffrey Smart and features the artworks of Jeffery Smart with thanks to Stephen Rogers, archivist for the Jeffrey Smart estate.
‘Jeffrey Smart’ by My Friend The Chocolate Cake is a song from the new album ‘The Revival Meeting’.
Lead singer and songwriter David Bridie credits his mother for introducing him to the work of Jeffrey Smart. “She was an abstract painter in her day,” David tells Noise11.com. “Whenever I’d go out to visit her she had this Jeffrey Smart. She was a big fan. I was very aware of it. I have a thing about shipping containers and that is all to do with the Jeffrey Smart series of paintings”.
Bridie has used the basics of Smart as an influence on his own songwriting. “When I look at Jeffrey Smart’s work I think if I were to approach songwriting like that it is shifting focus, it is looking outside of the square a bit. Sometimes there is a beauty in just ordinary people going about their lives,” David says.
“It’s like finding beauty in the ordinary. It’s a lovely concept. I think it’s a humanitarian concept that a shipping container, when the light is on it the right way and when you take the angles in the way that the colours work it has a beauty and intrigue to it. Sometimes it’s not a beauty, it takes your attention”.
