Neil Diamond is expected to announce he is leaving Sony for Capitol Records are 41 years.
Billboard is reporting that Diamond is about to sign the new recording contract with Capitol Records.
Diamond, 72, reportedly had the deal brokered by his manager and wife, Katie, and Capitol Music Group chairman and CEO Steve Barnett and Universal Music Group CEO Lucian Grainge.
The deal includes all of Diamonds back catalog from three labels. He originally recorded for Bang Records from 1966 to 1968 where he found his first success with songs like Cherry Cherry and Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon. In 1968, he moved to UNI Records, which soon became MCA, for what was arguably the height of his career both artistically and commercially. It was during this time that he released such classics as Sweet Caroline, Cracklin’ Rosie, I Am…I Said and Holly Holy.
Columbia lured Diamond away in 1973 for a reported million dollars per album advance, one of the most lucrative contracts to that time. He continued to produce hits for the next nine years but has failed to make the Hot 100 since 1986. What he lacked in singles success was more than offset with albums that continued to sell well, capping it off with the artistic comebacks 12 Songs (2005) and Home Before Dark (2008).
An official announcement is expected in the coming days.
