Neil Young has confirmed that the second volume of his Archives will be released in 2015, six years after volume 1.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Neil Young said “It’ll be finished this summer. All of the music will be done”.
Archives Volume II will span the second decade of Young’s career from 1972-1982. “It goes just past ‘Rust Never Sleeps’, Young said. “It’s full of albums that weren’t there before – stuff I did that I never put out.
Young had a number of unreleased albums during this period including ‘Chrome Dreams’ and ‘Homegrown’.
All songs from ‘Chrome Dreams’ filtered into ‘American Stars N Bars’ (1977), ‘Comes A Time’ (1978), ‘Rust Never Sleeps’ (1979) and ‘Hawks & Doves’ (1980). In 2007 Young released a sequel to the unreleased album ‘Chrome Dreams II’. It earned him a Grammy Award for ‘Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance’ for the song ‘No Hidden Path’.
‘Homegrown’ was shelved for ‘Tonight’s The Night’ (1975). Some of the tracks from ‘Homegrown’ were used on the later ‘American Stars N Bars’ (1977) and ‘Hawks & Doves’ (1980). Many are still unreleased.
Young also said in the Rolling Stone interview that fans will not have to wait six years into between the next three volumes. “The rest will come out pretty quickly,” he said. “While we’ve been working on Volume II, we’ve been working on the other Volumes”.
There will eventually be five Neil Young Archive sets.
Volume 1, released in June 2009, covers the period 1963-1972.
Volume II will document 1972-1982. Volume 3 will cover the 80s, Volume 4 the 90s and Volume 5 the 2000s.
Neil Young’s new album ‘A Letter Home’ will be released on May 23 through Warner Music.
