It’s a big week for New Edition as their three-night biopic premieres tomorrow on BET and they received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Speaking at the ceremony were Jamie Adams, the woman who spearheaded the effort to get the group enshrined, Steven Hill, head of BET, Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis and the band’s manager Brooke Payne. Ricky Bell spoke on behalf of the group. All six members attended, Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant.
New Edition had four top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, Cool It Now, If It Isn’t Love, Hit Me Off and I’m Still in Love With You but it was on the R&B tally that they really made their impact with sixteen top tens and additional hits like Candy Girl, Mr. Telephone Man and Can You Stand the Rain.
Each has had success outside of the group with Bobby Brown hitting the top ten nine times with My Prerogative, Every Little Step and others while Johnny Gill did it twice with Rub You the Right Way and My, My, My and Ralph Tresvant doing it once with Sensitivity. The remaining three members of the group formed Bell Biv DeVoe who had hits with Poison, Do Me! and The Best Things in Life Are Free with Luther Vandross, Janet Jackson and Tresvant.
