Forget Nashville as the Country Music Capital of America. New York has taken the honor. According to Nielsen SoundScan most country albums sold in the United States are sold in New York.
Nashville didn’t even make the top 5. Los Angeles was countries second biggest market followed by Dallas-Fort Worth in third place, Billboard reports. Nashville came in 6th place.
Of course, by pro-rata by population this statement falls in a screaming heap. New York and Los Angeles have a much larger population than Nashville (8.1 million vs 3.7 million vs 601,000).
New Yorkers have bought 826,000 country albums this year, Los Angeles accounts for 823,000 country albums sold so far in 2011 and Nashville has turned over 587,000 million sales so there is definitely more country albums selling per household in Nashville than in the two big cities.
249,287,000 albums have sold so far this year including 31,795,000 country albums. Country music accounts for 13% of all music sold in the USA so far in 2011.
