England’s iconic music rag NME is going to a free street press model.
The first New Musical Express, now knowns as NME, was published in March of 1952 and the last one that you will have to pay for will be out in September.
The magazine, which is now owned by Time, Inc., will go to an free model starting in September with 300,000 copies being distributed in Britain every week through retailers, universities and other points. Plus, while music will still be in the forefront, the magazine will add more about film, television, politics, gaming and fashion.
The website will also get a major overhaul.
Despite continuously falling circulation figures for street press in markets like Australia Mike Williams, editor of NME is optimistic. “The cat is out of the bag, and I couldn’t be more excited,” he said. “For the past few months we’ve been working in secret here at NME on the next phase of our evolution. The goal, throughout all of our research and development, has been to find new and inventive ways to connect with you, our audience, better than ever. In the 63 years since NME launched we have evolved and transformed plenty of times. The evolution of 2015 is our boldest ever move, and I’m delighted to be able to share the news with you at last.”
