According to US television ratings, more people were interested in what the family of Whitney Houston had to say after her death over Lance Armstrong’s Oprah Winfrey confession.
Armstrong’s tell-all generated 3.2 million viewers in the USA. (Yes, that’s right, 99% of America DID NOT watch it).
In the week following the death of Whitney Houston in March 2012, 3.5 million people tuned in to hear what her family had to say.
Armstrong’s interview was aired on the struggling Oprah owned OWN channel (Oprah Winfrey Network). Her old show on network TV used to generate over 10 million viewers per show.
Still, the show was hailed a success for OWN. Oprah’s show on OWN generates around 1 million viewers per days, so Armstrong tripled her usual ratings.
The increase in audience for the Lance Armstrong interview was attributed to men tuning in to watch the channel. OWN has a heavily female skewed audience.
