The Gotye and Kimbra song ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ has been covered by The Voice contestant Paul Turner on Holland’s The Voice and quite frankly it is bloody awful.
The Dutch version reeks on insincerity. Turner makes it sound like he was ordered to sing in, not wanted to sing it. His voice fails to communicate the same emotion of the original Gotye version or even the recent cover by Walk Off The Earth.
The Paul Turner version also completely ignores the entire Kimbra component of the original song that was essential in creating the clash of the relationship bringing meaning to the song.
I take it from Gotye’s tweet he wasn’t too excited about the Paul Turner version either. ”Make it happen and uh nuh nuh nuh nuh you were nothing” Paul Turner covers Somebody on The Voice, Holland! #Popmusic” he wrote.
Meanwhile, the Walk Off The Earth version generated another 2 million YouTube views overnight bringing the current tally to 21,893,561.
