The British DJ and broadcaster, Pete Tong, has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to Broadcasting and Music in the New Year’s Honours List 2014.
Pete Tong said: ‘It’s great to receive this honour for being a DJ. I’m proud that it acknowledges a profession that I care about a great deal, and one that’s made a huge impact around the world. I’d like to thank BBC Radio 1 for its unerring commitment to dance and electronic music and for supporting and encouraging me for over two decades. I’d like to thank all the club promoters in the UK and around the world for their passion and commitment to putting on amazing events and the artists producers and DJs that have been making and innovating with the music. This wouldn’t have happened without so many great tunes. Finally, to my family and team who have supported me on this journey in so many ways – thank you.’
The MBE caps a hugely successful year for Tong. He relocated to Los Angeles in September due to the increase in US-based broadcasting activity via his daily All Gone Pete Tong radio show on Evolution (a new dance music station on iHeartRadio, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment’s digital radio platform), and a weekly one-hour syndicated show, Evolution With Pete Tong (over 80 commercial hit radio FM radio stations across America). Tong continues to host his weekly BBC Radio 1 show (and the Essential Mix, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary).
In addition to an impressive and relentless global touring schedule and last summer’s successful launch of his weekly Le Grand Bazaar event at Ibiza’s Ushuaia Beach Hotel, his All Gone Pete Tong Arenas appeared at some of the world’s greatest music festivals, including Creamfields, Bestival, SW4, Tomorrowworld USA, and Sunburn Festival in India, with Mexico’s BPM Festival taking place on 7th January.
Tong’s annual IMS (International Music Summit) conference in Ibiza continues to go from strength to strength and the US edition debuted in LA last April.
In May, Pete took part in the Ibiza Cycle Challenge to raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
Released in November, ‘The Pete Tong Collection’ has become one of the biggest dance music compilation albums of the year.
