Midnight Oil’s Peter Garrett and Martin Rotsey as well as Goanna’s Shane Howard have performed at the foot of Uluru as the rock in ‘The Dead Heart’ of Australia’s has been closed to tourists forever.
Garrett and Rotsey performed Midnight Oil classics ‘The Dead Heart’ and ‘Beds Are Burning’ backed by an Aboriginal choir while Howard performed his Goanna classic ‘Solid Rock’. Howard wrote the song during a camping trip to Uluru in 1981.
“Its such a special day for all Australians,” Peter Garrett told 7 News. “For Midnight Oil and myself it is an incredibly pivotable and important day because what happened here infused us. I feel like a weight has been lifted now we have got people off the rock”.
The concert on Sunday was held near the Mutitjulu community, the traditional owners of Uluru.
Shane Howard also performed a new song for the rock ‘Palya Wiru, Uluru (Really Special, Uluru)’.
