Rocker Phil Collins was left beaming with pride after his actress daughter Lily stunned him by singing in her new movie Rules Don’t Apply.
Collins reveals she didn’t tell her father she was going to be showing off her vocals in Warren Beatty’s 1950s-set drama beforehand, so he received a pleasant surprise when Lily showed him the trailer for the first time.
“I didn’t tell him I was doing it (singing) until I sent him the trailer…,” she shared. “So I sent him the newest trailer of just me singing, and he got back and he was like, ‘Ugh, utterly fabulous!’ He was very proud; he was really, really excited.”
In the film, Lily plays Marla, a Christian ingenue that’s been brought to Hollywood by the enigmatic Howard Hughes (Warren) but before she has a chance at meeting her benefactor, Marla ends up bonding with her driver Frank, as portrayed by Alden Ehrenreich.
And while Lily loved performing as the character, she admits that she was a ball of nerves before shooting her music scenes, as well as performing the title song, The Rules Don’t Apply, written by Lorraine Feather and Eddie Arkin.
“It was really fun,” she smiled. “At first I was a little nervous because we sang live, but the thing is that my character is a songwriter, not a singer, so if my voice cracked or I got nervous, then it was fine, ’cause Marla’s would have.”
And the 27-year-old has also recently shared that she will jump at the opportunity to show off her singing chops again the future.
“I’d love to do a musical movie at one point maybe. It’s definitely something that’s part of me and how I grew up, but yeah, I’d love to try it again,” smiled Lily to LatinoReview previously.
Rules Don’t Apply, which also stars Annette Bening and Matthew Broderick, hits theatres at the end of November (16).
