Portland mini-orchestra Pink Martini pair with legendary Japanese vocalist Saori Yuki to collaborate on a new album.
Leader of 13-piece pop-jazz-bossa nova orchestra Pink Martini, Thomas Lauderdale, discovered Saori Yuki’s 1969 debut album Scat In The Dark years ago.
The band covered her song ‘Taya Tan’ on their 2007 album Hey Eugene! and three years later they brought her on board to sing a Japanese version of White Christmas for their Joy To The World festive album.
After performing tsunami benefit concerts in Japan last year, Yuki and Pink Martini recorded twelve songs from 1969 in Portland, the date becoming the title of the album.
1969 features 11 songs in Japanese and one in French, 11 old and one new. It will be released on EMI on March 23.
