PJ Harvey is copying the exact same concept Australian band Regurgitator used for their Band In A Bubble idea.
Harvey is recording her ‘PJ HARVEY: Recording in Progress’ album in full view of the general public in collaboration with Artangel and Somerset House. Australia’s Regurgitator did the exact same thing in 2004.
Regurgitator’s Boy In A Bubble was developed by the band’s manager Paul Curtis in 1999. In 2004 he signed a deal with cable music channel Channel V to produce the show.
The bubble was built and placed in Melbourne’s Federation Square. Regurgitator recorded their album inside the bubble in full view of the public and the entire project was filmed, then broadcast by Channel V.
Harvey has chosen to make her much anticipated ninth album inside an architectural installation, open to public view at Somerset House’s recently opened.
New Wing for four weeks only. The structure, a recording studio in the form of an enclosed box, has one-way glazing, displaying PJ Harvey, her band, producers and engineers as a mutating, multi-dimensional sound sculpture.
PJ Harvey said “I want the recording process to operate as if we are in a recording gallery. I hope the public will be able to experience the flow and energy of the recording process.”
Harvey’s recording will take place at Somerset House between the 16th January – 14th February.
Regurgitator’s efforts were released as the band’s fifth album ‘Mish Mash’ on November 15, 2004.
