Hot on the heels of the announcement that Jesse L. Martin has been, once again, selected for the role of Marvin Gaye in the movie Sexual Healing, we get news that Martin’s old boss on Law and Order is being considered for the role of Gaye’s mother.
S. Epatha Merkerson has, who played Lt. Anita van Buren on the long running NBC show for nineteen years, is in talks with producers for the role of Alberta Gaye, according to Deadline Hollywood. Martin played Detective Ed Green for nine of those years.
The film will concentrate on Gaye’s later years when he was trying to rehab himself from drug addiction and get his career back in order. Helping in that effort was promoter Freddy Cousaert, who will be played by Brendan Gleeson (Troy, Gangs of New York, In Bruges).
Martin originally left Law and Order in 2009 to take the role of Gaye but changes in producers saw him dropped from the project with other names bandied about for the title character. The last of those was Lenny Kravitz who was just recently dropped and Martin put back into the lead.
