The Church have a new member. Ian Haug of Powderfinger has joined the iconic Australian band for their 25th album.
Haug slipped quietly into the band in 2013 for touring duties after founding member Marty Willson-Piper decided he no longer wanted to continue with the band. Lead singer Steve Kilbey recruited Haug to take his place for live shows and in the early parts of 2014 went into the studio with Haug, Tim Powles and Peter Koppes to record The Church’s 25th album, tentatively titled ‘Further Deeper’.
‘Further Deeper’ is almost complete and will be ready for release in September 2014. Haug will tour with The Church on their upcoming shows.
The wording of the announcement from The Church reads as if Haug is only a fill-in. “Original member Marty Willson-Piper was unavailable to make the album, so Ian Haug (Powderfinger) has stepped in to fill the breach on both the new recording and upcoming live shows,” the announcement said.
Ian Haug was a founding member of Powderfinger. Powderfinger disbanded in 2010 after seven albums, five of which reached number 1 on the Australian chart.
