Prince Charles To Appear On Countdown 40th Anniversary Special

His Royal Highness Prince Charles has made a very funny video to mark the 40th anniversary of the time Molly Meldrum completely stuffed up his interview.

Prince Charles filmed his Countdown appearance during his visit to Melbourne in 1977. Countdown host Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum was so nervous that he kept stumbling though the introduction to the Prince, much to Charles’ amusement.

The Prince has filmed a new piece for the TV special ‘Countdown: Do Yourself A Favour’, to air on the ABC on November 16 and 23 on the ABC.

“We’re absolutely thrilled His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has taken time out from his Royal duties to help us celebrate COUNTDOWN’s birthday with us. His sketch highlights HRH’s keen sense of humour and the obvious affection he has for Molly and COUNTDOWN,” says ABC Director of Television, Richard Finlayson.

The original piece of footage from the 1977 Prince Charles appearance has gone into history as one of the most classic pieces of all-time for Australian television.

Charles was visiting Countdown to launch the release of the Silver Jubilee Australian Top 20 album with proceeds going to the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Appeal for Young Australians.

The interview took place at AAV studios in South Melbourne. Charles was in the building for exactly 13 minutes but in that time television history was created.

“There is an old show business saying, which warns “Never to work with animals or children.” But nobody prepared me for Molly Meldrum,” Prince Charles says for the new TV special.

COUNTDOWN – DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR

Featuring interviews with a stellar cast and showcasing the original footage and music from the 70’s and 80’s, COUNTDOWN – Do Yourself a Favour is the definitive story of an Aussie pop legend. Presented by Julia Zemiro.

Part 1 airs Sunday 16 November at 7:40pm on ABC
Part 2 airs Sunday 23 November at 7:40pm on ABC
