Prince Was In Talks To Play Glastonbury

Late music icon Prince was in negotiations to perform at the 2016 Glastonbury Festival before his death.

Festival founder Michael Eavis and his daughter Emily had made a number of attempts to get the Purple Rain singer to headline the British event over the past few years, but never managed to get him onto the famed Pyramid Stage.

This year was no exception, and Michael had been scheduled to meet Prince’s agents to make a deal about a headline slot before the icon tragically passed away in April (16), aged 57.

“I was going to meet his agent, it was all planned but it didn’t happen,” he told Britain’s The Sun newspaper. “His death was so sad. That’s a real star that we never had.”

Prince was originally going to play the festival in 2014 but he pulled out because rumours of his appearance began circulating on social media before he had confirmed.

Michael told Britain’s Guardian newspaper at the time, “We wanted him to play, and it got to the point where his people were talking to us about him doing it, but before he confirmed, he got really upset because he thought we had advertised that he was playing. We hadn’t, but with social media, rumours get everywhere, and one of those rumours was that Prince was coming… So he didn’t want to do it in the end.”

Prince also dropped out of the event for the second year in a row in 2015. The Who rockers Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend revealed after their headline slot that they were drafted in to replace him.

Adele, Muse and Coldplay are set to headline the 2016 festival in Somerset, England between 24 and 26 June (16). The organisers are planning a major tribute to Prince during the event.
