Producer Shadow Morton, best known for his work with The Shangri-Las, Janis Ian, New York Dolls and Vanilla Fudge, has died at the age of 72.
Morton worked closely with songwriters Ellie Greenwich and Jeff Barry. One of his early works was the recording of ‘Remember (Walking In The Sand)’ for The Shangra-Las with a very young and unknown at the time Billy Joel on piano.
Shadow Morton was considered “an architect of the girl-group sound”. With Greenwich and Barry he co-wrote The Shangra-Las biggest hit ‘Leader of the Pack’.
He then went on to produce Janis Ian (Society’s Child), Vanilla Fudge (You Keep Me Hanging On) and Iron Butterfly (In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida).
Morton died in California on February 14 after battling cancer.
