Music legend Quincy Jones is raving about Australia’s indigenous icon Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu.
Jones says Gurrumul is “one of the most unusual, and emotional and musical voices that I have ever heard”.
Jones, the 82-year producer, composer, conductor, musician, and TV producer, has won 27 Grammy Awards from 79 nominations during his career. He produced Michael Jackson ‘Off The Wall;, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ as well as the charity song ‘We Are The World’. He has also produced albums for Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Sarah Vaughan, Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Aretha Franklin and Donna Summer.
Quincy Jones was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
“I know everybody is kicking back ready to get your mind blown like I had mine blown when I first was a privy to hear this incredible man’s voice. It’s unbelievable,” he said about Gurrumul.
Gurrumul will make his US debut with five dates this year. He will play SubCulture, New York (April 29), the New Orleans Jazz Fest (May 1), Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago (May 3), El Rey Theater, Los Angeles (May 6) and TBD- San Francisco (May 9).
