DJ Adrian Cronauer, the real person portrayed by Robin Williams in the movie Good Morning Vietnam, has died at age 79.

Cronauer was just 12-years old when he made his first broadcast on a children’s amateur hour in Pittsburgh. He attended the University of Pittsburgh and founded the schools first radio station WPTS.

Adrian Cronauer enlisted in the 1960s and served as an Air Force Radio and Television Broadcasting specialist. He was stationed in Crete before being transferred to Vietnam.

After his Vietnam experience Adrian had the idea for a TV sitcom in-between MASH and WKRP In Cincinnati. The idea eventually developed into the movie plot for ‘Good Morning Vietnam’.

Good Morning Vietnam was based on Cronauer’s time in Vietnam from 1965 and 1966.

Adrian Cronauer earned a law degree after he left service/ He specialised in Information and Communications Law.

Adrian Cronauer lived in a nursing home in Troutville, Virginia. His wife Jeane died in 2016. He is is survived by a stepson, daughter-in-law, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
