Paul Kantner, co-founder and guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and spin-off band Jefferson Starship, has died from organ failure at the age of 74.
Kantner had suffered the heart attack earlier this week and had previously had a heart attack in March 2015. He had been in poor health for a number of years.
Kantner joined Jefferson Airplane soon after it was formed by Marty Balin and eventually became the band leader and longest continuous member of the band.
Jefferson Airplane played at America’s three most famous festivals, Monterey, Woodstock and Altamont.
Jefferson Airplane classics include ‘Somebody To Love’ and ‘White Rabbit’.
In 1972 the band broke up and Kantner started spin-off group Jefferson Starship with Grace Slick. Kantner left Jefferson Starship in 1984 and the band continued as Starship with the hit ‘We Built This City’.
