Songs from a 1969 Jimi Hendrix session featuring Stephen Stills will be officially released for the first time on the third of the Hendrix rarity trilogies ‘Both Sides of the Sky’.
Hendrix invited Stills to a session at New York’s The Record Plant in September 1969. At the session Stills performed ‘Woodstock’ for the first time. The song, written by Joni Mitchell, would appear a year later on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album ‘Déjà vu’.
Stills spent the day with Hendrix and recorded a couple of hours of content, much of which has been widely bootlegged until its official release now.
Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. commented, “We have a growing commitment to preserve the legacy of Jimi and also to continue to give the worldwide family of Jimi fans quality releases. That’s what Both Sides of The Sky reflects…our ongoing commitment. In a deeper sense, it’s the keeping of a promise. Jimi and I once made a promise to each other. He said he would take care of me and I told him I would take care him. Through his music and our preservation of his work, my brother and I honor one another. We are now in our third decade of watching over Jimi’s creative works and our resolve to maintain the integrity of what he left us has only grown stronger with time.”
‘Both Sides of the Sky’ is the third album in the trilogy of unreleased Jimi Hendrix material following ‘Valleys of Neptune’ (2010) and ‘People Hell and Angels’ (2013).
‘Both Sides of the Sky’ will be released on 9 March 2018.
