Record Store Day Australia will return for 2014 on the Saturday of the Easter weekend, April 19.
Record Store Day Australia reminds music stores of the uniqueness of the physical shopping experience where music knowledge can be gained first hand from experts across the counter.
The weekly music sales figures constantly show that for albums Australian’s still prefer the physical disc. Last week in Australia of the 45,865 sales making up the Top 10 albums only 16,117 were digital. 29,748 physical Top 10 albums (64.9%) of sales were downloads.
Not one album in the Top 10 last week sold more digital copies than physical.
The only growth factor in music in 2013 was vinyl. “People, who don’t know about the resurgence of vinyl ask me who buys it and I usually say anyone who doesn’t have cloth ears. So many true music lovers are turning away from the flattened audio of an MP3 and want a warmer, richer sound and that’s where vinyl comes in. Sales of records are up 77% in the past twelve months, and Record Store Day Australia helps drive that.” said George Papadopoulos, Chairman of AMRA, which runs Record Store Day Australia.
Record Store Day activities are now being planned across Australia with artists committing to in-store performances, record labels confirming collectors item releases and stores baking up a few cakes.
