Former Skyhooks guitarist, now presenter for ABC Radio Melbourne Red Symons, has suffered “a significant injury to his brain” according to the ABC.

Red Symons fell and slammed his head into a footpath working home from a supermarket on July 5.

ABC Radio’s Jon Faine said this morning, “He’s working at coming back as soon as he can. The bottom line is he’s had a significant injury to his brain.”

Faine also confirmed that Symons “fell backwards, he hit the back of his head very hard on the pavement.”

Red Symons was guitarist for the first three Skyhooks albums ‘Living In the 70s’ (no 1, 1974), ‘Ego Is Not A Dirty Word’ (no 1, 1975) and ‘Straight In A Gay Gay World’ (no 2, 1976).

He also rejoined the band for reunions in 1983, 1984 and 1990 (when the band recorded ‘Jukebox In Siberia’. He also participated in the 1994 tour.

Symons went on to make a household name for himself on ‘Hey Hey Its Saturday’ and since 2003 has presented the breakfast show on ABC 774.

Faine said Red is “bored out of his brain” but will stay off work until he makes a full recovery.
