Reg Mombassa of Dog Trumpet and formerly of Mental As Anything is today working with the title Creative Ambassador for tonight’s New Year’s Eve fireworks in Sydney.
Mombassa has designed the Cranium Universe for tonight’s display. “Every human perceives the world and the wider universe through books and films or looking at it in their heads,” Mombassa told ABC News. “Theoretically it’s an illusion, but we wanted to empty the Cranium Universe onto the Sydney sky and that was the idea with the Cranium Universe”.
The fireworks on Sydney Harbour will feature seven tonnes of pyrotechnics, 11,000 aerial shells and 25,000 shooting comets.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge effect will be twice as big as last year’s. It will be 12 storeys high and 72 metres wide. Fireworks will also be displayed from the Sydney Opera House tonight for the first time in a decade.
Fireworks producer Aneurin Coffey told the ABC that the event costs the city $6.8 million and generated a return income of $156 million. “It’s all about how Sydney, Sydneysiders, the harbour shine on New Year’s Eve around the world,” he said.
