Rick Derringer has been arrested after taking a loaded gun on a plane.

Derringer was on a flight from Mexico to Atlanta. He told police that he flies 30 to 50 times per year and always has the gun in his carry-on bag. An investigation found one documentable case where the gun made it through security measures on January 5 in Sarasota, FL with Rick flying to Atlanta and, then, Cancun.

According to authorities, the screener from the January 5 incident has now been let go.

Rick added that, because he has a license allowing him to carry the weapon, he thought that it was alright to have it on the plane.

Derringer was carrying a Kel-Tec pistol with six rounds of ammunition in his bag. It was discovered when he was selected for a search after coming off the flight at Atlanta’s airport.

Kenn Moutenot, Derringer’s manager, has said that Rick will work with the government to clear his name.

Rick Derringer started his career in 1965 at the age of 17 when he recorded the lead vocals on the McCoys’ hit Hang on Sloopy. He went on to be recognized for his guitar playing with Johnny Winter and in a solo career that included the 1974 hit Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo.
