Rick Springfield has posted a statement at his Facebook page commenting on the death of his former Zoot bandmate Darryl Cotton today in Melbourne.
In his statement, Rick says, “We were bandmates in our early 20’s and good friends in our early 60’s. Darryl Cotton, lead singer of the best band I was ever in, passed away this morning in Melbourne after a battle with cancer. He now knows what we all want to know. Bless your great spirit my friend. Keep a spot in the band for me up there.
“All my love to your great life and your beautiful family”.
Zoot formed in Adelaide in 1965 and disbanded in 1971. The band also featured Beeb Birtles and Rick Brewer. Beeb would go on to further success with Mississippi then the Little River Band. Rick formed The Ferretts and had a number one hit in Australia with ‘Don’t Fall In Love’. Darryl had a solo top 10 hit with ‘Same Old Girl’ while Rick had a string of American successes, the biggest hit being ‘Jessie’s Girl’.
Darryl lost his battle with liver cancer today (July 27, 2012). He was diagnosed in May.
