Ringo Starr received the French Medal of Honor on Tuesday, where he was made a Commander of France’s Order of Arts and Letters.
The Commander of France’s Order of Arts and Letters is the FRench equivalent of a knighthood. Ringo has not been made a Sir in the UK at this point.
While many sources are reporting it is for his art, in fact, Starr received the award for his body of work in the arts as a whole. The Commander level is the highest level of the award and is presented to up to twenty individuals per year.
The ceremony, which took place at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, was held in conjunction with an exhibit that included two paintings by Ringo. He told reporters and photographers “I’m a drummer, but I can do other things. Like painting, living, breathing…”
Previous musicians who have received the Medal of Honor include David Bowie, Bono, Stevie Wonder and Patti Smith.
