John Otway, Rock ‘n’ Roll’s greatest failure, flies to Cannes this week for the Film Festival premiere of the documentary about his career.
Titled Rock And Roll’s Greatest Failure: Otway The Movie, this surprisingly good film charts the all too frequent lows and spasmodic spectacular highs of this one man’s ongoing reach for stardom.
The screening takes place at 2pm on Sunday 19th May at Olympia 5, organised by Marche Du Film. It will be preceded by an Otway banquet and a live gig on the previous day and the ‘March of 100 Otways’ through the streets of Cannes at 12pm on Sunday morning.
John Otway’s live performances are legendary and as part of the ongoing promotion he is flying his band over for a special one-off midnight show at Morrison’s Bar on Saturday night.
Rock And Roll’s Greatest failure: Otway The Movie received its first screening late last year in London. Never one to stint, Otway chose Leicester Square Odeon for the ‘producer’s cut’ adding on the film’s ending on the day.
Financed by his fans, the movie was deemed unanimously to be a triumph. Featuring classic archive film and TV footage plus interviews from family and antagonists universal in their estimation of his talent, it shows just how much can be made out of just how little. Analysing the disastrous decisions that led to 25 years out of the limelight before returning once again to the top, it demonstrates all too well the pitfalls of the rock ‘n’ roll dream.
Rock And Roll’s Greatest failure: Otway The Movie follows in a great tradition of rock films, from Spinal Tap and Performance onwards, but its frank (and unwittingly hilarious) no holds barred portrayal of one of rock’s most likeable characters makes it an unreserved, must see, stand alone HIT.
