Rod Stewart’s number one 1978 dance hit ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’ looks set to become a 2017 number one DNCE hit.
Stewart has teamed with popsters DNCE for a new version of ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’. The song will premiere at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday but for now, here is a sneak preview:
DNCE is the pop outfit of Joe Jonas. Jonas formed DNCE in 2015 and scored a worldwide hit with ‘Cake By The Ocean’.
Rod Stewart’s original version of ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’ was from his 1978 album ‘Blondes Have More Fun’. The song uses a string arrangement by Bobby Womack from ‘Put Something Down On It’.
Stewart wrote the song after the release of ‘Saturday Night Fever’. At the time he thought his early 70s style of rock and blues was about to be blown off the planet by disco … so he decided to spoof the genre.
Other classic rock acts at the time Paul McCartney and the Stones also followed Rod’s lead. McCartney released the disco fuelled ‘Goodnight Tonight’, the Stones released ‘Miss You’. It paid off. Stewart reached no 1 in Australia and the USA, McCartney reached no 5 in the USA and no 6 in Australia, the Stones reached no 8 in Australia and no 1 in the USA.
