My good friend Russell Morris has created a beautiful tribute to Ros O’Gorman, my wife of 37-years, who passed away from cancer in May 2018.
Russell wrote ‘Forever Remembered’ after experiencing the loss of many of his friends including Jim Keays and Darryl Cotton in recent years. “It’s about missing people close to me who I’ve lost; friends like Jim Keays and Darryl Cotton and [rock photographer] Ros O’Gorman. They’re all in there,” Russell said.
Ros is immortalised in the lyrics about rainbows and photographs. Yesterday Russell told me, “Along the way when you lose people but they aren’t gone. At the end of every chorus I signify the ways in which they are remembered such as rain on the roof, a rainbow, the sound of a car driving up the street, someone walking across crumpled up leaves, a baby crying, a bird singing, a flower blooming. Loved ones are remembered in those things. They awaken the DNA in your body you shared with those people. It is an emotional song for me and the most important song on the album”.
Russell’s ‘Black and Blue Heart’ comes after the ARIA Award-winning blues trilogy series of ‘Sharkmouth’, ‘Van Dieman’s Land’ and ‘Red Dirt, Red Heart’. When Russell started work on ‘Sharkmouth’, it was always meant to be a trilogy.
‘Black and Blue Heart’ is a return to rock with production by Nick DiDia (Bruce Springsteen/Pearl Jam) and former Powderfinger frontman Bernard Fanning.
