Newly married singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright has arrived in Australia only to be surprised by Australian politicians backward attitude to marriage equality.
Back in the USA, President Obama acknowledged the right of gay people to marry and Rufus recently wed his partner Jorn. “I was quite surprised when I got here,” he tells Noise11.com. “I didn’t know the deal here, that there was no gay marriage. Isn’t Sydney the gayest city on Earth? Probably because there is no gay marriage! Certainly Obama having acquiesced and changed his mind and convinced of the right way (in my opinion) it’s a big deal”.
However, an Australian tour has placed Rufus and Jorn on opposite sides of the planet for now. “I got married in August to my now-husband Jorn. We are having our honeymoon apart in Australia. I will see him soon,” he says.
Rufus has the right attitude towards marriage. “When I first started out I was quite realistic about it. I said “I want my right to divorce”,” he joked.
Married life is also family life to Rufus and Jorn. “I have a daughter, Viva, who is 18 months, I have this new album and I’m married and I’m in Australia. It’s a whirlwind,” he said. Viva’s mother is Lorca Cohen, daughter of Leonard.
