Seal thinks it’s imperative to “pay your dues”, a viewpoint he tried to capture on his new album.
The soulful R&B singer is currently promoting his fresh LP, which is entitled 7.
The Kiss from a Rose hitmaker has gone through a lot of heartache in the past, having split from his supermodel ex-wife Heidi Klum in 2012 following seven years of marriage.
And Seal claims 7 is packed with songs that are emotionally authentic.
“The songs are personal, because that’s the only way I kinda know how to write,” he told ET Online. “It has to be personal. You know, there’s the old adage, ‘To sing the blues, you have to pay your dues’ and I really believe in that.”
Seal shares four children with Heidi, as he has three biological kids with her and he adopted her daughter Leni, whose hereditary father is Flavio Briatore.
Seal’s offspring are a constant source of inspiration for him.
“I think in every note that I sing, in every lyric that I write, in everything that comes from me as an artist and a human being, my kids are in it. They can’t not be in it,” he gushed. “They’re my raison d’etre [reason for being]. So, yes, they do inspire me a great deal. But then, it’s not just about them. I mean, I get inspired by everything.”
Overall Seal is incredibly happy with his life at this time.
Although having ended his marriage with Heidi left him with a tremendous amount of heartbreak, the stars feels he is “in a good place” right now.
Seal is praised the world over for his ability to sing a powerful love song, but he insists his tunes aren’t always inspired by romance.
“A lot of people will say that and they will sort of form their own conclusions, and they will say, ‘Well, [the songs] are based on my relationship or past relationships’ — and they’d be right in a lot of ways, but it’s not only about that,” he said.
Seal’s new album 7 will be released on 6 November (15).
