Sam Smith’s second album is about his parents splitting up.
The 22-year-old singer has enjoyed huge success with his debut offering In The Lonely Hour. And while his first record was incredibly emotive, as it focused on his relationship with a former boyfriend, he has promised that his next record will be even more heartfelt.
‘This will be the most honest thing I’ve ever written in my entire life,’ Sam told The New York Times. ‘It’s about my mom and dad splitting up, and it’s going to be even more honest and even more brutal.’
In fact, Sam is already testing reactions to his latest material. And if the extreme responses to the music are anything to go by, Sam could be in for even more success with his second record.
‘I showed my makeup artist the other day,’ Sam added, ‘and she burst into tears.’
Sam is nominated for a staggering six gongs at this weekend’s Grammy Awards.
But he admits in the interview that it wasn’t until he heard Amy Winehouse’s debut album Frank when he was just 11 that he discovered how to develop his own unique tone.
‘The grittiness and honesty in her music, it started to affect my singing,’ he said. ‘I started becoming Sam Smith, the singer, instead of trying to be Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. I was creating an identity in my voice, whereas before I would just clone other singers.’
As well as potentially sweeping the board at the Grammy’s, Sam is also set to perform at the star-studded event.
