Sheppard Land At No 1 On ARIA Singles Chart

We have a new No.1 single in Australia, Brisbane act Sheppard with their second release “Geronimo”, which lives up to its namesake, and leaps up seventeen places to land at the top spot on the ARIA Singles Chart this week.

The last time a song jumped to the top of the charts from outside of the Top 10 (without debuting at #1) was back in October 2011 when Kelly Clarkson’s “Mr. Know it All” went from 12 to 1 (helped by her promo tour at the time). Last week “Geronimo” matched the No.18 peak that the bands first entry “Let Me Down Easy” (from their self-titled EP) achieved, but this week they score not only their first No.1 single, but the groups first Top 10 entry, plus it’s the third No.1 for the MGM (Metropolitan Groove Merchants) label (the other MGM {Metro Goldwyn Mayer} label had 19 No.1’s between 1948 and 1976), with their other two being in the pre-digital era, Cosima with “When the War is Over” (August 2004, CDV through MGM) and Joel Turner & The Modern Day Poets with “These Kids” (Dream Dealers thru MGM) in December 2004.

“Geronimo” becomes the 1017th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2014) and the 452nd for ARIA (1983 to 2014), plus it’s the first time that the word ‘Geronimo’ has appeared at the No.1 spot, and only the second time it’s cracked the Top 10, the previous one being in January 1964 when The Shadows took their same-named song to No.8 for a single week. Sheppard become the 101st Australian act to achieve a No.1 single on home soil, and “Geronimo” is the 156th Australian performed No.1 song, whilst the last mixed-group (non all-male/female) of locals at the No.1 spot was back in October 2003 when the Australian Idol Final 12 made it to No.1 with “Rise Up”, plus Sheppard are the second local act to hit No.1 this year after 5SOS did it back at the end of March.

So after twelve broken weeks at No.1, “Happy” for Pharrell Williams is back down to No.2 for a fourth time, although it has always bounced back, but maybe not again for next week. Also pushed down a place are Clean Bandit with Jess Glynne to No.3 with “Rather Be”, which is now certified 2x▲ Platinum in sales. Leaping up six places to a new peak of No.4 is Sia with “Chandelier”, and it now becomes her second highest charting single behind her No.1 appearance with Flo Rida on “Wild Ones” back in 2011.

Two more tracks climbing to new peaks within the Top 10 are Peking Duk with “High” and Calvin Harris with “Summer”, both up two places each to No.5 and No.6 respectively, both of them also scoring Gold (●) in sales too. The last Aussie act to hit No.1 (two weeks ago), 5 Seconds of Summer drop three places to No.7 with “She Looks so Perfect”, the four-track EP debuting at No.2 on the US Albums chart this week (the single entered at #60), whilst other dropping tracks come via Gabrielle Aplin with “The Power of Love” (5 to 8), David Guetta and Skylar Grey with “Shot Me Down” (6 to 9) and tumbling seven places to No.10 are The Chainsmokers with “#SELFIE”.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Zendaya jumps up six spots to a new peak of No.11 with “Replay”, whilst Jessica Mauboy is back up a couple of places to No.17 with “Never Be the Same” (now Gold ●), and up a spot to a new peak of No.22 is Route 94 with “My Love”. Justin Timberlake jumps up fourteen places to No.25 with his new track “Not a Bad Thing”, with Iggy Azalea going back up to No.26 with “Fancy”. Chet Faker’s new album “Built on Glass” is out this coming week, and the current single from the set “Talk is Cheap” (HP-34) is back up nineteen places to No.38, whilst blasting up fourteen spots to land a new peak of No.40 are Glass Animals with “Gooey”. Three songs jump into the 41-50 region of the chart, firstly up nine places to No.42 is John Martin with “Anywhere for You”, Chris Brown with Lil’ Wayne and Too $hort jump up seventeen places to No.43 and after debuting at No.78 last week, the duet for Enrique Iglesias and Kylie Minogue, “Beautiful” leaps up thirty-one spots to land at No.47 this week.

DOWN DOWN: After seven weeks within the Top 10, peaking at No.3, Sara Bareilles drops three places this week to No.12, with the next big drop coming from former No.1 “Say Something” for A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera, falling nine places to No.24 this week, but it picks up a 3x▲ Platinum certification. “Free” for Rudimental and Emeli Sande is down five places to No.27. “All of Me” for John Legend drops six places to No.32, as too down six to No.35 is Jason DeRulo with “Stupid Love”. Falling out of the Top 50 this week are Eminem and Nate Ruess with “Headlights” (41 to 51), Havana Brown with “Whatever We Want” (35 to 57), Rixton with “Me and My Broken Heart” (45 to 62), “Recess” for Skrillex (49 to 67), Jai Waetford with “Get to Know You” (32 to 69), Lily Allen’s “Air Balloon” (47 to 73) and Shakira with Rihanna on “Can’t Remember to Forget You” (48 to 82).

Rita Ora lands the highest new entry of the week at No.19 with her fifth chart entry (four solo, one as featured vocalist) “I Will Never Let You Down”, with her last entry being the February 2013 track “Radioactive” (HP-23). A few places lower at No.21 is local rapper 360 featuring Pez with “Live it Up”, the second release from his June due album “Utopia”, the first being the Daniel Johns featured track “Impossible” (HP-25, Feb 2014). And by debuting so high, this track instantly becomes his second highest charting single, behind the No.3 single “Boys Like You” (peaked February 2012) and this is his tenth Top 100 entry and fifth Top 40 placing.

Lower 50: DJ Snake and Lil’ Jon are up eight places to a new peak of No.55 with “Turn Down for What”, with Sam Smith jumping up seventeen places to No.59 with his first solo single “Money on My Mind”. Chet Faker (with Kilo Kish) returns at a new peak of No.60 with “Melt” (former peak #68, Sept 2013). Lower down, Asgeir jumps up thirteen places to a new peak of No.77 with “King and Cross”, whilst up twenty-two spots to No.78 is local act Tonight Alive with “The Edge” from ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’ soundtrack. Trey Songz is up sixteen spots to No.83 with “Na Na” and further returning tracks come from Kate Miller-Heidke with “The Last Day on Earth” (HP-3) at No.79, Ball Park Music with “She Only Loves Me When I’m There” (HP-70) at No.88 and the constantly returning AwolNation with “Sail” at No.95.

The film ‘Divergent’ opened around the country on Thursday and the first single from the soundtrack (which enters at #54) is “Beating Heart” from Ellie Goulding at No.52. This becomes her sixth ARIA Singles chart entry (five solo and one as guest vocalist) and her second from a film, as “How Long Will I Love You” (from ‘About Time’) made it to No.46 in November 2013. One place lower at No.53 is the second entry for Canadian act Magic, with the track “Don’t Kill the Magic”, the follow-up to their former No.2 single “Rude” (peaked Dec 2013, TW-44).

360 not only debuts within the Top 30, but scores a No.76 entry with Lunar C entitled “Sixavelli”, whilst the final new entry at No.94 is from eighteen year-old US singer Austin Mahone entitled “Mmm Yeah” featuring Pitbull, and this song is taken from his late May due debut album “The Secret”.
